Fishing (A sideways Drop off)

{Fishing Drop Off}

This is a sideways drop off technique that involves a small front pivot off the edge of the object whilst rolling along by the object sideways on and then to get the front wheel of the object whilst the rear wheel hovers into nothingness a small front hop up and to the side. It is useful if you aren't confident enough to sidehop off something but a sideways drop off is needed. A run up is needed though unless you have dialed it totaly from the stand still but we will just look at the technique from a rolling start.

Step 1: Roll by the side of the object how ever big, 1-2ft is the best size to learn on. and whn you come to the point which you feel comfortable to jump off you use the front pivot technique to loft the front wheel up and over the drop, the rear should hover over nothing whilst the front wheel is still on the object like an endo but not straight. The Endo/ Front Pivot to get the front wheel of the edge doesn't have to be high at all but practice on a small object to find what feels best for you. When you do the Endo/ Front Pivot off remember to make it big enough so that your rear wheel will clear the side of the objct when coming down or else you will hit your rear mech or frame and fall off the bike over the bars head first! It isn't to hard to get it right.

Step 2: When your rear wheel hovers over nothing you have to add a small front hop in to hop the front wheel off the edge. You do this as you feel the rear wheel starting to drop after you had made the Endo/ Front Pivot to get the back wheel off the edge. By getting the timing right it will mean you will land rear wheel first which absorbs the shocks of landing best. Timing is crusil in the move to smoothly hop the rear wheel off then the front and then land smoothly back wheel first. Easy as that.

Bullet Points

  • Back wheel goes off first, then front and then land back wheel first
  • Make sure your back wheel clears the object to avoid coming off over the bars
  • Practice on objects 1-2ft and work your way up only when you have dialed the technique.
