Backhop

{Backhop}

Backhop on the spot looks impressive and is fairly useful, that is until you learn the move forwards (pogo/ lurch) where once dialed backhop on the spot is used less and less. But it is much easier to learn to backhop on the spot first and then go on to learning it forward.

Step 1: Roll along and put both brakes on to come to a standstill. Have your cranks horizontal and best foot forward. When you pull the brakes on pull a mini endo that raises your back end up about 0.5ft or so. When gravity does it's job and you feel your back end coming down to the ground (which will happen soon) let the rear wheel touch the ground again but instead of riding off you have to lean back and use the momentum of the small endo to take your front wheel up this time just after the rear end had been airborne. Keep leaning back until you are at a balance point where the front end feels weightless, it will be between too far and going off the back and not high enough where you won't get the height and the front end will drop. You will have to practice doing this to find it, Wheeleing is good practice for finding the balance point which is different for each individual.

Step 2: Once you find the balance point you have to do step1 but add a hop in so that once you are in the balance point you hop the rear wheel off the ground and hopefully keep hopping. You do this by pulling upwards on the bars and also at the same time using the bunnyhop technique of gripping you feet on the pedals to lift the rear up. Imagine yourself on a pogo stick and how you compress you arms and legs to hop up. Keep practicing this until your balance is good enough for you to keep hopping until your arms and legs tire. The hardest bit is usually not the adding the hop but getting your self in the right position to hop. Keep practicing it until you dial the correct balance point to add the hop.

Bullet Points

  • Put in a small endo to start you off which gives momentum to get to balance point from the still.
  • Keep both brakes locked at all times
  • Use your arms and legs to hop like the action when you hop on a pogostick
