Sidehop and Sidehop Drop Off

If you have learnt the Bunnyhop then it is very easy to learn the Sidehop. Just a few minor adjustments to your standard bunnyhop and you'll be laughing.

Step 1:. It Is by far easiest to learn at a stand still which requires a certain degree of balance but if you have been riding for a bit you should be more than fine. Trackstand or just stop on the spot and when your balance feels most comfortable go for it!

Step 2:. What you then do is instead of doing a normal bunnyhop straight up you lean your body weight to the side of your favourite foot but not to far over or you'll just fall off. Then Bunnyhop up and just as both wheels have left the ground that is when you push your weight even more to which ever side you were leaning This should direct the bunnyhop to the side. You only need the tiniest bunnyhop and still a sidehop should be possible. You have to get the correct medium between leaning to far out and not enough. Timing is crusial

Bullet Points

  • It is easiest to learn from a stand still
  • Lean your body weight to the side slightly before the sidehop
  • after BOTH Wheels are airborn then use your weight to push out to the side even more

Using The Sidehop For dropping Off

{Sidehop Drop Off}

The sidehop drop off is renowned with beginners who are at the point of pushing their standard up a gear for being a real stinker to learn and can often be very painful if you cock it up. It takes a lot of practice and the main point to make is work your way up from curbs up to roofs It is vital that you feel supremely confident that you will land a drop off before moving up to bigger drops.

Step1: When you are first trying this move most people find it easiest to start by dropping off an object around 1 ft to 2ft high. Roll along parralel to the drop at walking pace and when ready stop by pulling both brakes on as you would do normally. You should be about half an MBUK magazine width from the edge of the drop. Have your body weight slightly to the side that is to the opposite side of the drop so if your balance fails you early on you can bail out without falling down the drop side. You MUST look down and make sure both wheels are aligned at the edge and not one wheel near the edge and the other a foot further back because it will all end in tears.

Step 2: At a stand still transfer your weight back to the middle of the bike and make one small sidehop so your wheels are now a tyres width from the edge. As you hover over the edge shift your weight to the side of the drop and violently pull your bike over the edge into nothingness. You MUST absolutely go for it because if you bottle out while in that last position chances are you will have a nasty trip down to the bottom. Then hopefuly you should find yourself in mid air and with your feet push them downwards to force the backwheel down so you can land backwheel first, If you don't you'll land on both wheels which could be very painful while doing it off bigger drops. It will feel quite natural though and by the time you start useing this technique off bigger things you will be landing back wheel first without thinking about it.
