Rear Mech

{Ultrega Rear Mech}

What you want is a Short cage road mech, They are more compact than Mountain Bike rear Mechs like Shimano LX or XTR which means you've got less chance of hitting it it. They are also much cheaper, you can pick up a Shimano Sora rear mech from any good bike shop for under £20 where as an XTR rear Mech costs £70. Road mechs are generally very reliable, and will just sit there happily without any hassle. There isn't much point buying a Mountain Bike rear mech, If you want quality then you might as well pay £40 for the top of the range road rear mech (Shimano Ultrega) rather than paying sometimes up to double for a top of the range Mountain Bike rear mech (Shimano XTR)

The Cassette

{Diddy Road Cassette}

Once again a Mountain Bike cassette is not needed for trials, you can quite happily run a Road cassette which is a much smaller size than your average MTB cassette, and so means that the gear ratio is closer together giving smaller differences in power between in each gear making it easier to get the right amount of power for what your trying to do. They are also much lighter than MTB Cassettes and cheaper which is always a bonus. You can pick them up for sub £20 which is a bargain.

The Shifter

{Rapid Fire Shifter}

Firstly you only need one shifter (right hand side) if your using just the smallest chainring as I recommended before. It is a personal choice deciding if you use gripshift or the rapidfire type shifters (under changers) which you click with your thumb up and down gears and sit slightly underneath your bars. You have no chance of accidently changing gear with a rapidfire shifter as it is out of the way, this is very helpful as if you change a gear by accident when your dropping off stuff your going to know about it! Gripshift is usually fine but if you have narrow bars there is always going to be more chance of accidently changing gears than the Rapid Fires. But with rapidfire shifters it is usual to have to buy a pair, if you only run one chainring this is a waste of money as you only need the right hand side shifter. Gripshift in general is also cheaper than rapid fire, a right hand Sachs Wavey (basic gripshift) can be picked up for as little as £6, which is a phenomenal price these days.
