The Wheelset

The Rims

{Mavic D521 Rim}

They need to be as strong as possible, If you are just starting out you will land stuff hard, if you've got weak rims or XC rims they will buckle a lot and you'll eventually pringle them for good. The rim is the base behind a strong wheelset and the wheelset is oh so important in trials. Once you get smoother (could take years) you may want to consider using lighter rims at the front to make things easier for yourself, If you are a seriously smooth rider then you may even consider going light weight at the back, but bewarned if your not smooth you will just wreck a lightweight pair of rims. The Mavic D521 is the perfect choice for your first proper rim for trials, very reliable, strong, cheap and actually fairly light compared to many Downhill type rims.

The Hubs

Once again strength is the main thing you want from a good pair of hubs, For beginners Shimano LX is a common choice although i would spend the extra money on Shimano XT hubs that are a lot stronger and have a descent freehub unlike LX. Once you become more competent you might want Disc hubs, they can be used without disc brakes or more importantly with, they also tend to be stronger, Hope Sport or Bulb hubs are excelent choices.

The Tyres

{Tyres}

They have to be grippy (obviously!) but make sure they have good grip on the type of terrain you ride on mostly, if you ride a lot in the woods then something like the Tiogas will be good, with huge treds for that little bit more grip in the mud, but if you ride a lot of street on the concrete you want something else, IRC kujos are a good choice. They need to have good puncture resistance because the last thing you want is to be miles from home with a puncture, tyres like IRC Kujos are specially designed to protect against punctures. Width wise 2.3" is the norm although some like their tyres even wider and some prefer them about 2.1" for better acuracy.
