The Brakes

{Hydraulic Disc Brakes}

Of all the things you don't want to let you down the brakes must come up pretty high on the list. In a lot of situations in trials if the power isn't there at the right time it could be disasterous. Your brakes need to have lots of stopping power, after all that's why you've got brakes, to stop you! Most V-Brakes do this fine but sometimes they'll slip, Magura rim brakes have more powerful than V-Brakes and Hydraulic Disc brakes on the whole have even more power than the Magura Rim brake, although this doesn't necisarily make them better. It's not all about power you know! Modulation is useful for pulling tricks like stoppies and wheelies where you need your brakes to run at half power so there is enough power to get the bike up for say a stoppie but not so much that you go flying over the bars.

{Maguras HS33}

If your just starting into trials and don't have a lot of money to spend start off on V-Brakes like DX or LX, when you get better and feel the need for more power get some Magura Rim brakes, then after you've been riding a while either stick with maguras or buy hydraulic discs, it is a preferance thing and Hydraulic discs are in most cases not necisary for trials as Magura rim brakes are just fine. Most riders stick with Magura rim brakes, or go to discs and then change back to Maguras, because Maguras rule! Most of the profesional riders go for Magura Rim brakes, although a handful use hydraulic discs.
